American Warships in the Suez Canal

Many people are wondering why the USA has sent warships to the Suez Canal. The official line from the American government is that the warships are there as a preparation in case an evacuation of Americans are necessary, yet many people are wondering if the USA is actually contemplating military intervention, which of course they deny.

The flotilla of American warships consists of the USS Kearsarge Expeditionary Strike Group of six warships. Some of the helicopters on many of their decks have been put there to carry and drop the 2,200 marines of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit which has been bolstered by two special operations battalions. The USS Scranton also has joined the flotilla. The Scranton is designed to support special forces’ operations.
